Newport based gas distribution company Wales & West Utilities has taken delivery of 12 MAN TGM 6x4 26.280 and two MAN TGL 4x2 12.220 to help the business with its multi-million pound gas pipe replacement programme across Wales & South West of England.

The 12 MAN TGM 6x4 26.280’s where supplied with the design proven Thompsons ‘Loadmaster’ steel tipping body and the two MAN TGL 4x2 12.220’s where supplied with the multi-tasking Thompsons ‘Workmaster’ steel dropside tipping body. The vehicles were also fitted with Binotto underfloor tipping gear, Thompsons Covermaster sheeting systems and Palfinger/Epsilon grab loaders.

From the initial enquiry by Wales & West Utilities Transport Manager Mr Andrew Pettiford, operator safety was a prime concern for the business. Working closely with Andrew during the specification stage we were able to incorporate a number of safety features.

The Thompsons grab loader platform access ladders where fitted to improve operator access and egress. Its unique design gives the operator an angled climb when folded down reducing the effort and strain required. Extra large steps with thread plate ensure the operator of a secure reassured footing whilst climbing. This feature is now standard on all Thompsons crane installations.

To assist the operator with manually handling each vehicle was fitted with a Thompsons pneumatic trench compactor lift/carrier designed to prevent the operator having to lift the 75kg compactor on to the chassis. Twin pneumatic cylinders lower a carrier to ground level and lift the compactor from the floor on to the chassis. Spring assisted sides were also incorporated on the ‘Workmaster’ steel dropsides to reduce the effort and back strain required to open and close the sides.
